OSMOSIS


Definition:
Osmosis is the movement of water across a selectively permeable membrane.

In order to understand osmosis you must clearly understand three concepts:

  1. Diffusion
  2. Membrane structure and permeability
  3. Water concentraton (or activity) in the presence of dissolved compounds

This tutorial goes through those concepts in that order and then in the final section examines what are the consequences of osmosis.

There will be a short, ungraded quiz in the middle of the tutorial to make sure that you understand the parts of the membrane before you go on.
